Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Omer Aliyah (TOA) a 'religious thing?'
The wisdom incorporated into TOA is based on ancient, esoteric Torah that is deep and multi-faceted, yet has real-world practical application for how we navigate our lives. It is meant to be accessible to all participants independent of one's knowledge and background. What we do and how we define ourselves can be complicated. Ultimately, TOA is about being on an authentic spiritual journey within a specific timeframe with real, long-lasting results.

I'm already a frum Jew. Is this a 'Kiruv thing?'

This is a 'Klal Yisrael thing.' No matter what our observance level, this is a precious opportunity to dive deeper into the majesty of Sefirat Ha'Omer, to remove the Klipot that separate us from Hashem, to bind ourselves to the light of Torah, and to bring us closer to our fellow Jew. In the words of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, "...all Jews share one and the same Torah given by the One and same G-d. While there are more observant Jews and less observant ones, to tack on a label does not change the reality that we are all one."
What is Sefirat Ha'Omer?
With the mitzvah of counting the 49 days between Pesach and Shavuot, known as Sefirat Ha'Omer, comes a journey into the human psyche, into the soul. There are seven emotive attributes that make up the spectrum of human experience. At the root of all forms of enslavement, is a distortion of these attributes. Each of the seven weeks between Passover and Shavuot is dedicated to examining and refining one of these attributes. Read more here.
What is Tikkun HaMiddot?
The “refinement of character” called Tikkun HaMiddot is very much part of the Divine purpose in creation. Every individual “refinement” or “repair” contributes to the general “World Refinement” (Tikkun Olam). Never underestimate your power. One act of goodness could have monumental, cosmic impact and literally be the tipping point towards global redemption. The journey of Sefirat Ha'Omer is a journey of Tikkun HaMiddot, which directly contributes to Tikkun Olam.
I'm confused...is this a program? I don't get it.
TOA is a global, grassroots movement that offers tangible ways to engage. Examples include the resources and opportunities listed on the "individuals" sign-up page here. Community Partners might also offer opportunities to engage during these seven weeks. You are encouraged to reach out to them and inquire. Whatever it ends up looking like, as long as you are on an intentional Sefirat Ha'Omer journey, consider yourself part of TOA!
Does TOA cost anything to participate in?
No. Due to the generosity of sponsors, the TOA resources provided after signing up are free. That being said, Community Partners under the banner of TOA may produce events and opportunities which have a cost. Additionally, you might want to consider organizing your own activities! These can include Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh meals, a Lag B'Omer bonfire, outings into nature, etc. Make this authentically yours!

Do you have recommendations of ways to participate?

(1) Choose a Sefirat Ha'Omer book, text, or app to connect to every day of the 49 days. TOA began due to Neuriel Shore's transformative results from Rabbi Benji Elson's "Dance of the Omer" book. The e-Guidebook provided after signing up lists options for daily growth. (2) The weekly virtual Empowerment Seminars are great for keeping pace, connecting with others, and being empowered. Those who log-on live will be able to interact with the Spiritual Guides after their formal, recorded presentation. (3) Whether it’s the ocean, desert, forest or other setting, nature allows us to think bigger, marvel in the genius of Hashem’s creations, and to access inner spaces that unlock the Divine within. Consider tapping into the majesty of nature throughout your journey. (4) While this journey of individual growth requires contemplative solitude, it's so meaningful to share this time with others. Whether it's with one friend, a small group, or a community of many, Sefirat Ha'Omer is a spiritual inheritance for the entire Jewish people! Refer to the "Sample TOA Schedule" at the bottom of the page HERE for additional ideas.
